Carcassonne X - Le Chateau

 The castle of the count was built at the west of the ramparts, at this side, the height difference with the ground is very important. It was erected in the 12th century at the order of Bernard Aton IV Trencavel, an important viscount of Languedoc. A new religion, catharism, start to developp at this era.
 Due to the rise of this new religion, the Pope Innocent III proclaim the Albigensian Crusade in 1209. After a short siege the viscount Raimond-Roger Trencavel surrender to the northern crusaders in exchange of mercy for himself and the population. He still dies in jail due to dysenterie few month after his defeat.
His lands were given to Simon de Montfort, the leader of the crusaders, but quickly after the death of Montfort in 1218 and the royal intervention in Languedoc in 1226, the city was integrated within the Crown Lands and the castle is modified to become a true fortress within the city itself, to prevent revolts at first, and then to become the main stronghold at the border with the Kingdom of Aragon.

 Le château comtal fut érigé sur la partie occidentale des remparts, là où le dénivelé est le plus important. Il fut édifié au XIIe siècle sur l'ordre de Bernard Aton IV Trencavel, un important vicomte du Languedoc.
 A la même époque se développa une nouvelle religion : le catharisme. Face à sa croissance de plus importante au cours de ce siècle, et impuissant pour empêcher sa progression, le Pape Innocent III décida qu'une nouvelle croisade aurait lieu, mais non pas en Terre Sainte, mais dans le Midi de la France, ainsi advint la Croisade des Albigeois qui commença en 1209.
 Après un court siège, le vicomte Raimond-Roger Trencavel se rendit en échange de la vie sauve pour les habitants et lui-même, ce qui ne l'empêcha pas de périr de la dysenterie quelques mois plus tard en prison.
 Ses terres furent confiées au principal meneur des Croisés : Simon de Monfort, mais peu de temps après sa mort (1218) et l'intervention des Capétiens dans le conflit (1226) la cité fut intégrée dans le Domaine Royal, et le château fut remodelé afin de devenir une véritable forteresse au sein même de la Cité de Carcassonne, afin de prévenir toute révolte, mais également afin de devenir la pièce maitresse de la frontière française face au Royaume d'Aragon.
