Description

The Cité de Carcassonne is located on an hill on the right bank of the river Aude, it was always a strategical place in southern France and became a fortified town in the Roman era. After the loss of Catalogne, it's became an important stronghold at the border between Kingdom of France and Kingdom of Aragon.
That's why the Gallo-Roman walls were mainly destroyed and replaced by new ramparts in the 13th century. Saint-Louis (King of France : 1226-1270) ordered the construction of a second wall to protect the city against siege. Indeed at this era the King have still many ennemies in this region (Albigensian crusade take place in 1209-1229).

After the definitive annexion of Roussillon (it was shortly annexed in medieval era too) in 1659, the city start its decline, in 1849 the government even consider the idea of destroying the walls. This didn't happen thanks to a strong opposition and the city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc, the work began in 1853 but were only achieved after his death (1879)
